Shot and Tell is a macOS app made by Rob Gough. It is free, and it is provided as-is. These terms are short because the app does very little on your behalf: it reads the screen when you ask it to, and writes an image where you tell it to.
You may use Shot and Tell for anything you like, personal or commercial, on as many Macs as you own or control. Nothing needs registering and there is nothing to pay.
Copies installed from the Mac App Store are also covered by Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. Where these terms and Apple's disagree, Apple's apply to the App Store copy.
The screenshots you take and the images you export are yours. The app claims no rights over them, and no copy of them is sent anywhere — it has no network access to send them with. What you capture is your responsibility: if a screenshot contains someone else's information, the rules that already applied to that information still apply.
The source code is published on GitHub under the MIT licence, and you may build it, read it, fork it and modify it on those terms.
The name "Shot and Tell", the app icon, and the contents of this website are not covered by that licence and remain © 2026 Rob Gough. Please don't ship a copy under the same name.
The app comes with no warranty of any kind. It might have bugs, it might lose a capture you hadn't saved, and it might not do what you expected. To the extent the law allows, Rob Gough is not liable for any loss arising from using it. If something goes wrong, please tell me and I will try to fix it.
One thing worth being clear about: the redaction tool paints over what you drag a box across, in the exported image. Check the export before you send it. Anything you didn't cover is still visible.
If these terms change, the date above changes with them, and the change is noted in the changelog.
